Luke

The Gospel of Luke records Jesus as having said: "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! ... Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

Nehemiah

Those who have spent much time in church or listened to more than a few sermons on the radio have no doubt, in some form or another, heard a call for spiritual revival.  Revival in the faith tradition I was raised focused on saving souls and it looked like this: a plea for the conversion of the unsaved, a warning of repentance for the backslidden and a cry for the faithful to work harder at converting the unsaved and winning back the backslidden. In other traditions, the focus of revival is on reforming social injustice and is expressed through a call for Christians to engage in social justice and political action.

As I think about it, I have spent most of my life as a follower of Jesus responding to calls for revival, calling for revival or arguing how my understanding of revival is superior to all others--- yet deep down, something always incomplete about these ideas of revival.

The author, Jim Wallis, in his book, The Great Awakening , argues that “spiritual awakening isn't considered ‘revival' until it changes something, not just in people's inner lives but in society...spiritual conversion must lead to social reform.”   As followers of Jesus we shouldn't allow political parties to define for us what it looks like to love our neighbors.  Jesus loved each person he met as a whole person, body, soul, mind and spirit and so must we.  We shouldn't have to choose between saving souls and fighting injustice; we can and must engage in both.

Hebrews

The book of Hebrews - a literary masterpiece - proclaims and explains the supremacy of Jesus as God, king, prophet, and man. The brilliance of Hebrews is found in its simplicity of revelation. The book spiritually removes the blindfold that covers the eyes of us confused, dizzy children as we reach to pin the tail on the first thing we touch. In the months to come we will walk through the book of Hebrews with the hope that our eyes will adjust to the light of truth, that we will be enthralled by the beauty and love of our Lord Jesus, the Christ, and that we will go forth in love to serve our neighbors.

Between the Trees

Within the endless span of eternity we find time, space, matter, and life. Within this span the Bible portrays human existence as beginning and concluding in flawless lands, each containing a most precious tree, the Tree of Life. We live, however, between these two trees, in a flawed world, as flawed people. How should we understand and experience life in this time between the trees? Where is God and where are we? What should we think? What should we do? How should we live? In this sermon series we will explore our unique existence in this brief period of time "Between the Trees".
